In my Non-Objective work I determine the depth of field at various points in the picture plane. My approach allows me to maintain an open framework in my methodology. I make deliberate decisions to create ambiguities and tensions between shallow and deep space.
Recently I added textural elements to my artwork by cutting out shapes from works on paper I had done previously. Sometimes I let the content of the collage elements show, and other times they are buried and survive only as shapes which change the elevation of the ground. In any case they interrupt the calligraphic and painterly elements of the work in a stimulating manner.
In some recent paintings I have rendered some recognizable objects spontaneously and allowed them to inhabit my heretofore exclusively non-figurative works.
There are painted line drawings of rockets, money signs, hieroglyphics, and various machines parts, bottle caps, and coins so far. They are intended to act more as symbols than illustrations.
Also in the past few years I have also been working on a series of portraits of what I call Cultural Heroes Series depicting them in styles and atmospheres that express something of their essence.
